Mother's Day is a special occasion where we are able to come together and appreciate all that the mothers in our lives have done for us. But for widows, Mother's Day may be a challenging reminder of what they have lost.
Regardless of whether a woman is newly widowed or if she lost her spouse years ago, holidays like Mother's Day can delve up complicated and difficult emotions, causing widows to withdraw from family and friends. If your loved one is a widow, these holidays can also feel difficult for you, as you may be unsure of what to say or do. After all, nobody wants to say the wrong thing or bring up painful memories.
However, on holidays, it's especially critical to show up for your loved one as she navigates a difficult time. Here are four ways that the family and friends of widows can show their love and support on Mother's Day.
1. Spend time with her
Sometimes, just showing up is enough to show your loved one that she is not alone. Pick up her favorite latte and some specialty chocolates from the corner coffee shop. Bring some old photos of her and her husband and ask her to share some of her favorite memories with you. If she is sad, be a shoulder for her to lean on. If you're unsure of what to say or how to act, just try to be empathetic and think of how you might feel if the roles were reversed.
2. Plan an outing
A spa day might be just the thing to help your loved one relax and relieve some built-up stress. A good massage, a mani-pedi, and some good company could help take her mind off of the absence of her late spouse. If the spa isn't her thing, perhaps a nice picnic. Pack sandwiches, fresh fruit, and a delicious cheese selection. Find a nice quiet place, spread out a picnic blanket, and catch up while enjoying the scenery.
3. Create a nice care package for her
Take the time to thoughtfully choose items she likes, like her favorite herbal tea, a scented candle, yummy snacks, a monogrammed journal, or a pretty houseplant. If you can, take the time to hand deliver it and say hello.
4. Provide her with an act of service
One of the five love languages, an act of service could be anything from weeding her yard to watching her kids for an afternoon. Allow her some personal time, whether it means being alone and going for a walk, getting to the hair salon, or grabbing lunch with a friend. Acts of service show that you are thinking of your loved one and want to support her however you can.
During holidays like Mother's Day, it is important for widows to have a supportive network of family and friends they can rely on. Be sure to show up for the widows in your life, and let them know they are not alone.
